Caixa Geral de Depósitos - Official Selection
As always, dedicated to short film competitions and special programmes

HIGHLIGHTS

  • From Ninth to Seventh Art – Beyond Super-Heroes
Movies and Comics have always been so much in tight boundaries as in a slippery relation.
In the United States, since the 30’s and until early 80’s, cinematographic serials, B-Movies and television tried to adapt the most representative comics characters to the screens. Tarzan, Jungle Jim, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, or even Dick Tracy or Popeye had their film adaptations. In more recent times and in other parts of the world the fusion continued: Corean Old Boy is based on a Japanese manga (Japan’s comics), Fellini wanted to direct Mandrake and in germany, Ralf König’s homosexual short stories have been largely adapted.
Watchmen - Alan Moore2006 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Allan Moore’s “Watchmen”, unanimously considered the “Citizen Kane” of Comics, illustrated by Dave Gibbons. It will also be the year that will see the screen adaptation of this masterpiece that after going through the hands of Darren Aronofsky or Terry Gilliam ended up being directed by the unknown Paul Greengrass. Between the detective story and a reflection on the cold war thematic, “Watchmen” is, above anything, a despaired journey to the world of super-heroes and aside with the less valued M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable”, as the deepest reflection that cinema has reached about Comics and the super-hero concept.
Davi McKeanHaving this two films as a starting point and keeping super-heroes in an universe apart, we intend to show to our audience some more profound Comics adaptations, as well as creations coming from Comics authors that decided to go behind the cameras, such as the complete retrospective of Dave McKean’s films, director that will be present in the Festival.

  • Alejandro Jodorowsky – – An unique life
Alejandro JodorowskyTo complement the program dedicated to the relationship between Comics and Movies, there’s nothing better than a man that for his life and work represents by himself the all essence of the program. Be afraid, be very afraid… Alejandro Jodorowsky is coming to IMAGO.
Born in Chile, in 1929, Jodorovsky creates his first Comics (“Fabulas Panicas”) and directs his first “real” film (“Fando and Lis”) in 1967. In 1971, with “El Topo”, he becomes a mythical cinema figure, giving origin to the “midnight cult movies” in the United States.
For years he tried to adapt “Dune”, that included in the cast Orson Welles and Salvador Dali and music by Pink Floyd. In early 80’s, and back to France where he still lives today, he begins working with Moebius in what will be his Comics masterpiece until today (Incal’s saga) and goes back to movies in 1989 with another cult work (“Santa Sangre”).
As we did with Jess Franco in 2005, we hope we can have the privilege to have him with us for a master class that can transmit us some of his knowledge and experience, side by side with the retrospective of his work that we’re preparing.

  • Eastwood...Early Years
Clint Eastwood - The GauntletThe program dedicated to the works produced until 35 years old by nowadays acclaimed directors that can be somehow referential and stimulating for the younger generations to whom this Festival is done, is in 2006 dedicated to Mr. Eastwood.
Since his early movements behind the camera, Clint Eastwood tried to disconnect from his super-hero character image, which stick with him through out Leone’s westerns and the Dirty Harry saga as an actor. It took him more than ten years to be properly recognized as a director and ten more in order for the first official compliments could come up.
Our programming proposal focuses on Clint Eastwood’s early works, and so less commonly known, works during the 70’s of the past century. From his debut with today’s classic “Play Misty for Me” up until the great action movie “The Gauntlet”.

Heineken Open Space
Built as a “chill out” zone for audiovisual, the entrance is free and the ambience is relaxed and comfortable. The programs chosen are ideal for this space with video art, video clips, school projects, underground and experimental films, and this year a new competition devoted to films done specifically for the Internet and third generation cell phones.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Here Come the Swedish
Atmo CollectiveA section devoted to two of Sweden’s most polemical audiovisual collectives. The documentary makers Atmo, that have grown in popularity with their ability to create works where they show not only a deep and unusual reflection over, for instance, globalisation or the arms trading market, but also a twist of corrosive humor when they show politicians of the major world powers singing and dancing in hilarious edits.
Traktor CollectiveAnd also Traktor Collective, presenting their showcase “Four Seasons of Traktor”, that shows from video clips to the world wide famous MTV... or even commercial spots for top trademarks.
To complete this programme dedicated to Sweden we are considering the possibility of having with us 3 musical projects from the cold european north with concerts and dj sets. Stay tuned!

  • Stop Making Sense
Moog SynthethiserPicking the name from the mythical musical documentary directed by Jonathan Demme for Talking Heads in 1984, IMAGO debutes this year a daily session dedicated to Music Documentaries, recovering classics and presenting the most interesting nowadays productions.
The final line up will be revealed later in the year, but we can confirm for now “Moog” about the life of the creator and the creation with the same name, absolutely fundamental for today’s music evolution, and also “Zoom”, a documentary focusing on Benicàssim International Festival audience, directed by Pirra Lorenzo and Bernat Lliteras.
